Carters Chemist, a family-run community pharmacy in Brooklands, Manchester, has been sold to family-run local group, Zemmel Chemist, which already owns eight pharmacy branches across Greater Manchester.

The business dispenses around 6,800 items per month and provides additional services including the Pharmacy First scheme and a contraceptive service.

It was launched 10 years ago when it was relocated to the current site and was previously operated by David Carter. The deal marks the last of four pharmacies he has sold in the last 10 years through agent Christie & Co.

Situated on Maple Road and located within a residential housing estate approximately seven miles south of Manchester city centre, the practice was brought to market to enable Carter’s sister Gill, who managed the business, to retire.

It will now be taken on by Zemmel Chemist founders Shamoil and Zulfikar Karimjee.

Jon Booth, director of pharmacy at Christie & Co, who brokered the deal, said: “It is no surprise that Carters Chemist attracted strong interest when we launched to market.

“Having been located in Manchester, and with so few opportunities of this type being in the market at that time, within just three weeks we had over 100 enquiries and six offers.

“I know the buyers have significant plans to grow the business and I look forward to seeing how that progresses.”

Carters Chemist was sold for an undisclosed price.
